Farewell to Our Beloved Kate.

We’re truly heartbroken to share the news that Kate, our beloved crocodile at Crocosaurus Cove, has passed away.

Kate has been our champion female crocodile, bringing fascination and learnings to everyone who worked with her. Alongside her long-time partner William (formerly known as Houdini), she’s been part of our Crocosaurus Cove family since we opened in 2008.

The bond between Kate and William has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s rare to see crocodiles form such strong and lasting connections, but theirs was truly special.
Houdini earned his nickname for his impressive escape skills — always determined to find his way back to Kate.

Over their wonderful 30 years together, they welcomed clutches of eggs most years both during their time at the Darwin Crocodile Farm and Crocosaurus Cove.

Kate has been a cherished member of our community, and it’s been our privilege to share her journey with all our visitors over the last 17 years. Originally from the wild, she was estimated to be over the age of 60 and has taught us so much about the behaviour and resilience of female crocodiles. While the cause of her sudden passing is still being understood, we will share an update as we learn more.

To everyone who has visited Crocosaurus Cove and met Kate, thank you for being part of her story. We invite you to share your favourite memories and photos to celebrate the life of this incredible crocodile, who will be dearly missed by all of us.

To our team, past and present; none of us have spent time here at the park without having a story to tell about our little firecracker. We thank you for the care and respect you have shown her over the years. Additionally we also thank Stephen Cutter and the team at the Ark Animal Hospital, and Assoc. Prof. Sally Isberg of the Centre for Crocodile Research for being a pivotal part of our animal care, particularly with Kate, who provided us with more questions than answers over the time we have known her.
